It has been an institution in Berkeley for over 38 years. Anyone that has grabbed a cup of coffee at Peet’s , waited in line for one of their fabulous morning buns, and grabbed a loaf or two of the artisan breads to take home is probably wondering why as well.</font>  </p> <p align="center"><font size="4"><img src="http://www.google.com/url?source=imglanding&ct=img&q=http://www.roadfood.com/photos/13776.jpg&sa=X&ei=_W8mUJW-Fo7wiQLQ9YGACQ&ved=0CAkQ8wc&usg=AFQjCNF3QK9hSQA2P39vEZKoy4_3yGMfcw" /></font></p> <p><font size="4">“The Bread Garden is a true artisan bakery that makes all kinds of excellent loaves of bread and pastries and, best of all, a crisp-topped morning bun that is one of the best coffee companions anywhere in the Bay area.”</font></p> <p><font size="4">Is it any mystery what has brought so many shop keepers and artisans  from both the Bay Area and the Los Angeles basin?.  The town square is still the center of town.  People gather on Friday nights for concerts on the park , share a glass of wine, and stroll through the downtown. People still patronize the brick and mortar stores that surround the town square.  Their is a lively arts community. The weather is delightful, and the wine industry has drawn an ever growing group of first class restaurants.</font></p> <p><font size="4">The Bread Garden’s menu will feature freshly baked goods, including 10 types of bread, 30 different pastries, 20 types of cookies and eight desserts. </font></p> <p><font size="4">Read more here: </font><a href="http://www.sanluisobispo.com/2012/08/02/2168906/bread-garden-bakery-berkeley.html#storylink=cpy"><font size="4">http://www.sanluisobispo.com/2012/08/02/2168906/bread-garden-bakery-berkeley.html#storylink</font></a></p> <p><font size="4"> </font></p> <p> </p> <p align="center"><img src="http://www.jeremyriad.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/bread-garden-bakery.jpg" width="640" height="475" /></p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"><img alt="A Full Pastry Case At the Bread Garden Bakery" src="http://s3-media2.ak.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/KCcEFkOyKVwSpRsheXHS5A/l.jpg" /></p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"><img src="https://encrypted-tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTa4cWKtVoqiEx3L6llUWWz4wDGv7lZ4gp3dTs_RwvI7HNVYhMGzA" /></p> <p><font size="4">Owner David Morris, says construction will begin next month with an opening date set for late September. The owner is Danika Reed, a veteran of the cheese business. She opened Vivant in 2006. She holds a degree in Dairy Science from Cal Poly. She gained  experience as a cheese maker for them, as well as a strong background in sales and marketing with Hilmar (one of the country’s largest cheese producers for private labeling and food service). Between Vivant and Hilmar, she worked in a variety of other positions in the cheese business,before opening her own shop.  Vivant’s first incarnation was as a mobile cheese tasting room. Her target customers were local restaurants. Chef’s could come to the truck and taste her  cheeses, purchasing them on the spot. </p> <p>Vivant is now the Central Coast's premier cheese tasting room, featuring premium, local and imported handcrafted artisan cheeses paired with the finest Central Coast wine and beer. The shop carries about 150 cheeses both foreign and domestic with a nice selection of local offerings.</p> <p> </p> <p align="center"><img alt="Vivant Fine Cheese Club" src="http://www.vivantfinecheese.com/cheese/images/cheeseclub2011cheeseclub.jpg" width="480" height="480" /></p> <p> </p> <p>They have a lovely shaded outdoor patio where you enjoy a glass of local wine paired with their cheeses or one of their yummy sandwiches.  Their wine & cheese sampler is a bargain at $12.00.  The staff is friendly and very well informed.</p> <p> </p> <p>I<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-jI8DZW6VTgs/T85YlpB8lOI/AAAAAAAADbI/GhPknoy3Oc0/s1600-h/image%25255B9%25255D.png"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" title="image" alt="image" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-PyjgSUJkR-4/T85YsqJqKDI/AAAAAAAADbQ/gQAXuBq2Tdo/image_thumb%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="480" height="480" /></a> </p> <p align="left">They are open Monday, Wednesday , Thursday & Sunday 11:00 – 5, Tuesday by appointment only, Friday & Saturday 11:00-7:00</p> <p align="left">If you would like to expand your cheese repoirtoire they have a  bi-monthly cheese club.  The shipments have a different theme each month and include tasting notes, suggested wine pairings and recipes.  For more information on the club go here  <a href="http://www.vivantfinecheese.com/vivant-fine-cheese-club-signup.pdf">http://www.vivantfinecheese.com/vivant-fine-cheese-club-signup.pdf</a>.</p> <p align="left"> </p> <p align="center"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Vivant Fine Cheese" src="http://www.vivantfinecheese.com/images/vivant_fine_cheese_side-bar.png" /></p> <p align="left"> </p> <p align="left">  If you would like more information about their services, offerings, or directions go here <a href="http://www.vivantfinecheese.com/">http://www.vivantfinecheese.com/</a></p> <div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:45e4c19b-c4a7-4358-8b57-d274f259ead8" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent">Technorati Tags: <a href="http://technorati.com/tags/vivant+fine+cheese" rel="tag">vivant fine cheese</a>,<a href="http://technorati.com/tags/Paso+Robles+cheese" rel="tag">Paso Robles cheese</a></div> cindy hattersley designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16147135323683353754noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069221047767678788.post-36457825074401496662012-05-14T14:50:00.001-07:002012-05-14T14:50:20.886-07:00Villa Creek Restaurant & Villa Creek Cellars<p> </p> <p><font size="4">Wine grapes brought  Cris and Joann Cherry to Central California in the mid nineties, but it was the quality of life that seduced them to stay.  There is something about Paso. They sold their Mexican restaurant in San Diego and put their efforts into renovating  ‘dive bar’ on a prime corner of the downtown Paso Robles city park. The rest as they say is history. In the spring of 1998 the Cherry's opened Villa Creek. </font></p> <p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" alt="Villa Creek" src="http://www.winecoastcountry.com/images/assets/eat/VillaCreek_main.jpg" width="480" height="480" /></p> <p><font size="4"></font> </p> <p><font size="4">They were one of the forerunners dedicated to taking advantage of the area's finest local products.  Villa Creek has created a niche showcasing what they call early California cuisine.   Renowned Chef Tom Fundaro has been working with local farmers since 1998 preparing local, organically or sustainably farmed products in a rustic style that is Villa Creek’s signature.  </font><font size="4">Not only do they serve innovative fresh local cuisine for dinner they have one of the</font> <font size="4">liveliest bar scenes downtown.</font></p> <p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" src="http://www.pelicannetwork.net/images.wine/wine.villa-creek-b.jpg" /></p> <p><font size="2">                                                                                                             photo via villa creek website</font></p> <p><font size="4">A limited menu is available at the bar, featuring favorites like carnitas tacos, not nachos, and the shepherds plate.</font> </p> <p> </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-oUQSf067Xow/T7F-AdccGWI/AAAAAAAADV0/huRGLpSJlIE/s1600-h/image4.png"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" title="image" alt="image" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-4nzHKM53wz0/T7F-GvI-g8I/AAAAAAAADV8/-HbAYExPMKg/image_thumb2.png?imgmax=800" width="640" height="427" /></a></p> <p><font size="2">                                         Not Nachos </font></p> <p><font size="4">For the full bar menu go here:  <a href="http://www.villacreek.com/menus/index.php">http://www.villacreek.com/menus/index.php</a></font></p> <p><font size="4">Should you linger after the incredible appetizers, they do have one of the best wine lists in the area and an incredible seasonally tweaked menu. </font></p> <p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" src="http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/388258_306635052691792_109830432372256_1140656_1769013979_n.jpg" /></p> <p><font size="2">                                 boneless beef short ribs with sage gnocchi</font></p> <p><font size="4">One of the seasonal favorites that people rave about are the butternut squash enchiladas</font></p> <p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" src="http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/208762_203026633052635_109830432372256_687678_7335671_n.jpg" /><font size="4"></font></p> <p><font size="2">                             photo via villa creek website</font></p> <p><font size="4">To see the full dinner menu go here:</font></p> <p><font size="4">The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated creating a lovely early California ambience that complements the food.</font></p> <p><img src="http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/310387_292056414149656_109830432372256_1095490_103256916_n.jpg" /></p> <p> </p> <p><font size="4">Okay so they have a fabulous (one of the very first) established restaurant in Paso.   Next they decide they should make wine to complement the farm to table food they serve at Villa Creek.  They are visionaries. They wanted to crank it up a notch.  Villa Creek is one of the few that are in a class by themselves….The winery is not fancy. They have a couple of motley, friendly dogs that greet you when you pull up.  The clincher is the wine…Cris Cherry himself often is pouring..,.He doesn’t ,make his presence known.   Suddenly you realize..hmmm he is the master of the whole operation.   All of their wines are wonderful. The Willow Creek Cuvee is one of the most lauded.  The Wine Spectator Insider gave the 2009  93 points. </font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" alt="WILLOW CREEK CUVÉE, 2010, $45" src="http://www.villacreekstore.com/assets/images/products/large/2010-WILLOW-CREEK-CUVEE-FRONT.jpg" /></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p><font size="4">The High Road James Berry Vineyard  2009 also earned 93 Points. </font></p> <p><font size="4"> We personally love their “Pink” which is a bargain at $14 and always sells out quick.  It is a great summer wine. “Tank fermented saignee shows notes of peach and lead to a rich palate of just ripe strawberries, orange zest and anise. For a couple years they operated their tasting room in downtown Paso Robles until they built their present tasting room on the estate. The property on Hwy. 46 includes 30 acres, 20 of which he started planting with Rhone varietals in 2005.  With a focus on the Chateauneuf-du-Pape style wines from the Rhone Valley of France, Sellers buys grapes from a half a dozen Westside growers to supplement his own vineyard’s fruit, and will make about 4,000 cases this year. Sellers now has a new winemaker Jeremy Weintraub who comes to Paso from Napa Valley, where he made wine for Seavey Vineyards for four years. Before that he worked for  Shadow Canyon for three years, so he knows the people, growing conditions and varietals well. Ed and Jeremy both agree that they “want well-balanced, food friendly wines that have good acidity to stand up to the fat in food, and the richness in food, but don’t become the food.” </p> <p>By the way that old roommate that Ed Sellers came to meet on that all important visit is John Carson.  His wife Kendall is the tasting room manager and she and her team run one of the friendliest and informative wine tasting rooms in the area. </p> <p><img src="http://farm2.staticflickr.com/1223/5144053260_f0353d2a15.jpg" /></p> <p>photo via Edward Sellers website</p> <div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:e96098d7-3d04-44d5-9443-3a224d6f356a" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent">Technorati Tags: <a href="http://technorati.com/tags/Edward+Sellers" rel="tag">Edward Sellers</a>,<a href="http://technorati.com/tags/Hospice+du+Rhone" rel="tag">Hospice du Rhone</a></div> cindy hattersley designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16147135323683353754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069221047767678788.post-74292634858301094062012-04-09T18:36:00.001-07:002012-04-10T09:52:51.511-07:00Wine for Paws & Earth day Food & Wine Festival<p> </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Cl3LOxchXq4/T4ODeEtnmWI/AAAAAAAADO0/RMXXe5cdI0o/s1600-h/image%25255B13%25255D.png"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" title="image" alt="image" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQZLxMeo_CSLlg0-cwfgUbjCOdUzXfI6vg1qYnrr42-LvMWxb_4DuHfTgRbka5MqPf7h56Q_pUj6kD025DjociisTYZCIBtfVLxLsgPu5bbO4uPeojcF9PeaizF3B4LlpkLhBSomWPc1A/?imgmax=800" width="532" height="768" /></a></p> <p> <font size="4">Beau and Riley would like everyone to come out and support  The 4th Annual Wine 4 Paws on April 14-15.    70 wineries from Edna Valley to San Miguel will be participating.  To take part all you need to do is visit any of those wineries that weekend.  You can find a list of participants at  </font><a href="http://www.wineforpaws.com"><font size="4">www.wineforpaws.com</font></a><font size="4"> .  These generous wineries will be donating either a percent of your purchase or your tasting Fee to Woods Humane Society.</font></p> <p><font size="4">Need a map to find your way to the Wine 4 Paws Wineries? Roger founded  The Home Hill country Inn and Restaurant in New Hampshire, now a famous Relais & Chateaux. </p> <p>Ten years later… Roger thought it was time to develop his  profound passion for wine.  The search was on to find the perfect land for a vineyard. In fall of 2005, he released his first vintage of RN ESTATE Wines. </p> <p><img src="http://www.rnestate.com/images/headers/photo_findourwines.jpg" width="640" height="329" /></p> <p> </p> <p>Roger crafts exceptionally food friendly wine. We specialize in red Rhône and Bordeaux varietals, estate grown on his small hilltop vineyard. His limited production allows him to handcraft premium boutique wines” with a subtle harmony of flavors”. Private tastings are available by appointment. If you love a bordeaux varietal that shows restraint with a french sensibility schedule a private tasting. You won’t be sorry.  Finding his winery can be a challenge but worth the effort. A tasting at RN Estate is a memorable event. Roger is an extremely gracious host, and unselfishly shares his knowledge of his wines and their cultivation.  The tasting takes place at a big wooden table with massive views of the valley below.</p> <p> </p> <p><img src="http://www.rnestate.com/images/headers/photo_home.jpg" width="640" height="328" /></p> <p> </p> <p> He crafts a number of varieties including Pinot Noir from Fiddlestix Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills  which has received accolades from wine lovers This wine is composed of Dijon clones 113, 115 and 667. It is aged 12 months in French oak.</p> <p>To find out more about Roger’s wines and where you can find them <a href="http://www.rnestate.com/">http://www.rnestate.com/</a></p> <p> </p> <p>All photos courtesy of RN estate website.</p> <div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:95c84f19-9aa5-41c8-932f-dc33ae558a2c" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent">Technorati Tags: <a href="http://technorati.com/tags/RN+Estate+Wines+Paso+Wine+Fiddlestix+Vineyard" rel="tag">RN Estate Wines Paso Wine Fiddlestix Vineyard</a></div> cindy hattersley designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16147135323683353754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069221047767678788.post-73601201519819604642011-12-22T07:11:00.001-08:002011-12-22T07:19:05.860-08:00It is Beginning to Look A lot Like Christmas<p> </p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8PvTkTMITxGpx0hjQFkTQ-5lEwfYEVtvta6tikXR0QbzbNPPGdGQOyqeJGYrpkkgDyIMHAI7hzNAmpxa80Oe7gGrnG5R4Q1NxNkugGSBlxFJePCOeoeRXsaUK0gpb7cAbu0cTe3n2cfw/s700/sbnature.jpg?gl=US" /></p> <p align="center"><font size="5">These guys are hold center stage this time of year!</font></p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuwrXbX6Fz6tidw6jgCFCozasOwnJCjGLq1aVCZCdS3c5Dqy_ihxspj9mMhqRYeDyZHr25TjvZpUEhdP0dt-pEVNKc9DZQy63kJpMuBkbiCn4_i5MjaqQN6buFjji7lrDO1uKlOWadh98/s1600-h/DSC_0724%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img style="display: inline" title="front door villa cantina" alt="front door villa cantina" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-uwmOw1iFDx8/TvH_GF3sEvI/AAAAAAAACOQ/PBFsSxq7I74/DSC_0724_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="514" height="768" /></a></p> <p align="center"> </p> <p align="center"><font size="5">The front door wears a magnolia wreath embellished with gathered moss, branches, pine and Manzanita</font></p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-e8DFVv19W2I/TvH_IZ0a-lI/AAAAAAAACOY/gXCeh9odxe0/s1600-h/DSC_0732%25255B21%25255D.jpg"><font size="5"><img style="display: inline" title="DSC_0732" alt="DSC_0732" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3kZz2_I-nDsvbdeC3MtJ2bmwQGGlF8t1DOLkEQqEmDhW4UeJGq1u8GXLdzX-tu4Y1dAg7s023ilTvml1NgQfYGBkIHgv0b2azB71GYTLFLRrwp-M-nO7kQQJQDrCXsytny498q7WyAX8/?imgmax=800" width="514" height="768" /></font></a></p> <p align="center"><font size="5"></font></p> <p align="center"><font size="5"></font></p> <p align="center"><font size="5">LOVE Trader Joe’s mini wreaths @$4.99. Little has changed since the Spanish missionaries discovered it in 1771.  It is a nature lovers dream.  Deer,  multiple species of birds, and even a herd of bison can be seen at dawn or dusk roaming the landscape. The population is less than it was in 1800 when mining ventures resulted in the development of a thriving mining district. The small town of Jolon rapidly grew into a thriving town that served the developing area. Mexican land grants were broken into small homestead parcels. </p> <p><a href="http://www.pbase.com/mikemcq/hunter"><img border="0" alt="elk herd.jpg" src="http://i.pbase.com/u17/mikemcq/large/42207390.elkherd.jpg" width="800" height="515" /></a></p> <p><font size="1">photo courtesy of mike mcquiggan</font></p> <p> </p> <p>Hidden inside of Fort Hunter Liggett (designated as a military reservation in 1941) is William Randolph Heart’s Hacienda. Today it is operated as a hotel.  Before he built his "castle" on the coast, William Randolph Hearst built  The Hacienda . The rambling Spanish Colonial Revival structure was built in 1929 and originally called the Milpitas Ranch House. Designed by Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan, it was a working ranch, drawing inspiration from the nearby Spanish mission for its white stucco walls and Spanish-tiled roof. In 1929, construction of the complex began on the site of the original Milpitas Ranch House that recently had burned. A south wing originally in the designs and intended to be Hearst's private quarters was never completed. Julia Morgan and Hearst correspondence indicates that original Hacienda plans were to house 20 employees; these plans were expanded to house 30 employees. Construction cost reached $200,000. Hearst used the Hacienda as a hunting lodge, and he enjoyed it so much that even after he built his big house at nearby San Simeon, he built a private road to facilitate travel between the two properties. </p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="You can stay at Mr. Hearst's house, which is now a hotel." src="http://0.tqn.com/d/gocalifornia/1/7/8/F/2/Hac-9-a.jpg" width="640" height="431" /></p> <p><font size="1">photo courtesy of Betsey Malloy</font></p> <p><font size="4">Northwest Tower of “The Hacienda”</font></p> <p><a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/The_Hacienda.jpg"><img alt="File:The Hacienda.jpg" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/98/The_Hacienda.jpg/800px-The_Hacienda.jpg" width="800" height="600" /></a></p> <p><font size="1"></font></p> <p><font size="4">Southeast Tower</font></p> <p><a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fc/Milpitas_Hacienda1.jpg"><img alt="File:Milpitas Hacienda1.jpg" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fc/Milpitas_Hacienda1.jpg/800px-Milpitas_Hacienda1.jpg" width="800" height="504" /></a></p> <p><font size="1">photo courtesy Wilkepedia</font></p> <p><font size="1"></font></p> <p><font size="4">West Corridor</font></p> <p><a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/79/The_Hacienda_west_corridor.jpg"><img alt="File:The Hacienda west corridor.jpg" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/79/The_Hacienda_west_corridor.jpg/444px-The_Hacienda_west_corridor.jpg" width="444" height="600" /></a></p> <p><font size="1">photo courtesy of wilkepedia</font></p> <p> </p> <p><font size="3">The Hacienda once housed a modest restaurant that I believe is presently closed. You might wonder where might one find a bite to eat out in the middle of nowhere? We travel this road on our way to Villa Cantina twice every weekend.  I must confess when we noticed that the Lockwood Store now housed a restaurant it was primarily a source of amusement . Well the joke was on us.  If you love a great burger in a funky 50’s inspired diner you will love this place.  The owners are friendly and the service is spot on.  I believe they are open for dinner Thursday through Sunday .For more information you can call 831- 385-5750, or take a peak at their facebook page for their menu. <a title="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lockwood-Stores-Hungry-Flats-Diner/104154066331361#!/pages/Lockwood-Stores-Hungry-Flats-Diner/104154066331361?sk=info" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lockwood-Stores-Hungry-Flats-Diner/104154066331361#!/pages/Lockwood-Stores-Hungry-Flats-Diner/104154066331361?sk=info">http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lockwood-Stores-Hungry-Flats-Diner/104154066331361#!/pages/Lockwood-Stores-Hungry-Flats-Diner/104154066331361?sk=info</a></font></p> <p><font size="3"></font></p> <div style="padding-bottom: 0px; If you live in the area or happen to be game for a road trip to the little town of Nipomo don’t miss it.  It is held at the historic Dana Powers Barn in Nipomo and is the brainchild of Judy Watkins who lives on the property.  At one time Judy had a little shop called LaDeDa.  She later partnered  with a friend and opened CaLa in Old Edna which later expanded again and moved to downtown, San Luis Obispo, California.  Judy now devotes her time to putting on the Bi-Annual show which is held each Spring and Fall.  The theme of this springs’ show is….<strong>stylishly green—generously giving. </strong><strong></strong>There will be 40 plus hand picked vendors offering up a wide variety of wares.   The best part? A  portion of the proceeds will go to the local Habitat for Humanity<strong>.  </strong>Representatives from the San Luis Obispo Habitat for Humanity will be on hand to meet and explain all the wonderful things they do to help the community. </font></p> <p><font size="3"></font></p> <p><font size="3">Here are some photos from past shows courtesy of Judy Watkins blog</font></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/Ta4nwCnIVqI/AAAAAAAABsQ/PvVqnOKkQrk/s1600-h/IMG_98163.jpg"><font size="3"><img style="background-image: none; Mission San Antonio de Padua rests on ground that has remained virtually unchanged for more than two centuries. </font></p> <p> </p> <p><font size="4">The mission and its environs remain unique due to its secluded location. It is considered the most remote and isolated in the chain. It is more than twenty miles from the nearest  town of any size. Of all the California Missions, it offers visitors perhaps the most accurate glimpse of what mission life once was.</font></p> <p><font size="4"><font size="4"><img style="display: block; float: none; Should I spin off the design and lifestyle portion with another blog? Many of you followed solely for the local interest portion.  Yet most of you were more interested in the design and lifestyle portion. I still haven’t quite decided where to go with it. Maybe in the coming weeks you all can help me out.  </font></p> <p align="left"><font size="4">March is the beginning of the festival season in Paso.  Paso was once a haven for Zinfandel.  Many of the winemakers on the west side have found that the terroir and climate are better suited to the Rhone Varietals.  However there are still some very good Zins to be found in the area.  If you love Zin then Paso is the place to be March 18th –20th. </font></p> <p><font size="4">Throughout the weekend you can savor farm to table food offerings  special tastings,  winemaker dinners, and more. </font></p> <p><font size="4">Click here </font><a title="http://www.pasowine.com/events/zinfandel-festival.php" href="http://www.pasowine.com/events/zinfandel-festival.php"><font size="4">http://www.pasowine.com/events/zinfandel-festival.php</font></a><font size="4"> to request a Zinfandel Festival brochure  and receive more information about the Zin Tasting & Wine Country Auction, and the various winery events happening throughout the weekend.</font></p> </blockquote> <p><font size="4">If you aren’t lucky enough to reserve Villa Cantina or you are looking for a romantic room for two you must  visit Hotel Cheval. </font><font size="4">    Located in the heart of downtown Paso, it is a designer’s heaven.</font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="Front view of Paso Robles Hotel Cheval" src="http://www.hotelcheval.com/images/about.jpg" width="640" height="365" /></p> <p> </p> <p>There are only sixteen rooms and each is impeccably designed with no detail left to chance.</p> <p> </p> <p><img alt="Luxurious Bedroom at Paso Robles Hotel Cheval" src="http://www.hotelcheval.com/images/accomodations.jpg" width="640" height="404" /></p> <p> </p> <p>Who wouldn’t want to savor a glass of wine in front of  one of the fires on the lovely patio?</p> <p> </p> <p align="left"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2277/2048160812_c0578616a6.jpg" width="640" height="477" /></p> <p align="left"> </p> <p align="left">Or grab a cocktail at the hip Pony Club inside…</p> <p align="left"> </p> <p align="left"><img title="HotelChevalPonyClub" alt="HotelChevalPonyClub" src="http://travelpaso.typepad.com/.a/6a0120a54103a7970b0147e2290ff7970b-320wi" width="640" height="414" /></p> <p align="left"> </p> <p align="left">…or alfresco on a warm evening</p> <p align="left"> </p> <p> </p> <p align="left"><img border="1" alt="The patio outside the Pony Club" src="http://media.lasplash.com/4/Hotel_Cheval-7.jpg" width="400" height="300" /></p> <p align="left"><font size="4"></font></p> <p align="left"><font size="4">For more information visit their website: <a title="http://www.hotelcheval.com/" href="http://www.hotelcheval.com/">http://www.hotelcheval.com/</a> </font></p> <p align="left">all pictures courtesy of Hotel Cheval</p> <div style="padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: none; padding-top: 0px" id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:ac7f9a03-7a82-4ac1-b5e0-4fc277ff201f" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent">Technorati Tags: <a href="http://technorati.com/tags/Paso+Robles+Zin+Festival" rel="tag">Paso Robles Zin Festival</a>,<a href="http://technorati.com/tags/Zin" rel="tag">Zin</a>,<a href="http://technorati.com/tags/Hotel+Cheval" rel="tag">Hotel Cheval</a>,<a href="http://technorati.com/tags/Paso+Wine" rel="tag">Paso Wine</a></div> cindy hattersley designhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16147135323683353754noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069221047767678788.post-32386130269819710582010-09-26T22:13:00.001-07:002010-09-26T22:13:44.189-07:00Studios on the Park<p> </p> <p><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" alt="" src="http://www.studiosonthepark.org/images/page-galleries/studios_at_night.jpg" width="640" height="362" /></p> <p>                                                                                                             photo courtesy Studios on the Park</p> <p><font size="4">If you haven’t visited Studios on the Park you should stop in and take a peek. The Studios are the brain child of local (transplant) and artist Ann Laddon.  It was her vision to have an art center with working studios that would allow the community  to interact with working artists, take classes, and support the arts in the heart of downtown. The studio is comprised of ten studios with over 50 working artists. On any given day you can find a number of artists perfecting  their latest works. It also houses the Paso Robles Art Associations’ Gallery.</font></p> <p><font size="4"> One of their more interesting exhibits , “ Who Do We Think We Are”, runs until mid October.  Twenty nine of the Studios’ artists reveal themselves through evocative self portraits in their preferred medium. </font></p> <p><font size="4">                                                              This one is titled “Life's a Trip” by Barbara Rosenthal.</font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p><font size="4">  <img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" alt="PHOTO COURTESY OF STUDIOS ON THE PARK" src="http://www.newtimesslo.com/images/cms/sized/arts-lead-StudiosonthePark%203-9.16.jpg" width="366" height="480" /></font></p> <p><font size="4">                   </font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p align="center"><font size="4">Jeanette Wolf’s self portrait,constructed  from mixed plastic, paper mâché, chicken wire, metal washers, metal pipe, driftwood, cork, plaster, and paint a  is entitled “The Good Ride”.  It stands 4’ 6”</font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p><font size="4"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" alt="" src="http://www.studiosonthepark.org/images/page-galleries/Jeanette 1.jpg" width="280" height="390" /></font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p><font size="4">                                I love this one ‘”On my way to becoming a Cat”  by Helen K. They essentially put their life (and their  uncompleted house!) on hold in order to finish this project.  They have worked tirelessly nearly every weekend since Christmas.    We love them and are so grateful they were willing (and  able) to take this on!</p> <p>So here she is (Villa Cantina) in all her glory….</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TGBIm6hJpjI/AAAAAAAABAQ/uF29Po_E2nM/s1600-h/DSC_0320%5B11%5D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; It was l04+. It was much more comfortable in the tasting rooms.  We stopped by one of our favorites  Linne Calodo  who consistently produces some of the best wine in the area.  “Linne Calodo takes its name from the rocky, limestone soil type of Westside Paso Robles, and it's this soil Winemaker Matt Trevisan sees as one of the essential building blocks for his wines... Producers of Rhone and Zinfandel blends... Supporters of sustainability... Experience the Linne Calodo wines daily from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. 3030 Vineyard Drive, Paso Robles, CA 93446. 805.227.0797. ” <br />They are a family owned and operated winery. The winemaker and owner Matt Trevisan works closely with the growers from other noted local vineyards.  He is a strong believer in making wines that are “regionally distinctive.”  They have a beautiful new tasting room and they also have some of the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff working in the tasting room.  </font></p> <p><font size="4">We particularly liked the Rising Tides and the  Cherry Red.  If you get a chance stop by because they usually sell out.</font></p> <p><font size="4"></font></p> <p><font size="4"> <img alt="" src="http://www.pasowine.com/images/logos/linnecalodo.jpg" />                                 </font><a href="http://www.linnecalodo.com/index.cfm?method=products.productdrilldown&productID=E9B5D833-2264-112B-B1DA-3AE6A80C57F1"><font color="#333333" size="4"><img border="0" alt="2008 Rising Tides" src="http://www.linnecalodo.com/assets/images/products/pictures/08_risingtides_front-2401.jpg" /></font></a></p> <p><a href="http://www.linnecalodo.com/index.cfm?method=products.productdrilldown&productID=E9B5D833-2264-112B-B1DA-3AE6A80C57F1"><font size="4"></font></a></p> <p><font size="4">We also spent a little time scouting wedding locations as we are going to have a wedding next summer! <span style="font-size: medium;">Here is what the last guestroom looked like when we purchased Villa Cantina</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">Here is the room now with one of the shutters hung above the bed</span><br />

Unexpected Objects as Art<blockquote></blockquote>When gathering information for this post I realized a theme was developing. My husband and I have collected antiques since we were in college. In my own home I don’t have a single lamp that began its' life as a lamp. I have a few nice paintings from my friend Pat Huber <a href="http://pathuberfineart.com/collections/9145" title="http://pathuberfineart.com/collections/9145">http://pathuberfineart.com/collections/9145</a>. You can read the post I did on her art here <a href="http://villacantinas.blogspot.com/2010/04/kitchen-completion-and-beautiful-art.html" title="http://villacantinas.blogspot.com/2010/04/kitchen-completion-and-beautiful-art.html">http://villacantinas.blogspot.com/2010/04/kitchen-completion-and-beautiful-art.html</a> . More often our “art” began it’s life as something else. If I find something that intrigues me it might end up a lamp, wall art, or something even different. Steve and I were repurposing things before we new it was in vogue to do so. Steve purchased old Pennsylvania barns for their beams and has used them in several homes he has built or remodeled over the years. I intend to do a post on that in the future.<br />
In one of my older posts I posted a picture of this fabulous grape gathering bucket that I had been coveting from Barreveld. I knew I wanted to use it somewhere I just wasn’t sure where.<br />

<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TCozyw_2uiI/AAAAAAAAAtc/NLvgzXhbnf8/s1600-h/DSC003874.jpg"><img alt="DSC00387" border="0" height="486" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TCoz0TPHr6I/AAAAAAAAAtg/dFE62BDQjGU/DSC00387_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="DSC00387" width="366" /></a> <br />
Since the budget didn’t allow for a fab work of art I filled it with a mixture of gathered local sticks and faux flora. Now it is one of my favorite details.<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TCoz1x2ykEI/AAAAAAAAAtk/eWPXYEjH_xk/s1600-h/DSC007084.jpg"><img alt="DSC00708" border="0" height="774" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TCoz5N88qCI/AAAAAAAAAto/wyG-hoFUpk8/DSC00708_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="DSC00708" width="582" /></a><br />

The great oars in the picture above have made their way around Villa Cantina as well. They look great wherever I put them!<br />

<br />
I found these old french porch balusters at one of my favorite haunts Center Street Antiques in Soquel. I knew when I found them they would make fabulous lamps. Look what Colin created over the weekend. Drum shades are from ballarddesigns.com. <br />

<br />
This area was desperately calling for something interesting. This isn’t the most attractive stair rail. I hope to give it a better finish at some point. I think something old always adds character to an area that can be cold and unwelcoming.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TCo0P9A3AZI/AAAAAAAAAuA/d09srWVWpIA/s1600-h/DSC0075830.jpg"><img alt="DSC00758" border="0" height="648" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TCo0TqdAN5I/AAAAAAAAAuE/DftjGQUgJaU/DSC00758_thumb28.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline;" title="DSC00758" width="1030" /></a> <br />
<br />
On the wall a great pair of Oars that I found on Ebay here and a fabulous pair of canoe paddles from Crawford Antiques in Soquel. <br />
<br />
On the wall an old barn vent from a Pennsylvania barn that Steve purchased the beams for a home he did several years ago. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TCo0VarndBI/AAAAAAAAAuI/WGpF-VSg6SQ/s1600-h/DSC00756%5B3%5D.jpg"><img alt="DSC00756" border="0" height="772" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_jr5MeElGsZo/TCo0ZiYYWtI/AAAAAAAAAuM/D8mK1JvD34w/DSC00756_thumb%5B1%5D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline;" title="DSC00756" width="580" /></a><br />

The end result is much friendlier and welcoming don't you think?<br />

This beautiful Victorian Farmhouse had long intrigued us. We were absolutely taken with the property and pleasantly surprised with their wines. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">Halter Ranch is a relatively new winery with a rich history. Located on Adelaida Road, near Vineyard Drive, the property dates to the 1880s, when it was part of a 3,000-acre ranch owned by Paso Robles pioneer Edwin Smith. The Victorian farmhouse Smith built in 1885 remains a Westside Paso Robles landmark. In 2000, Swiss-born businessman Hansjorg Wyss fell in love with the property .Their vineyards are planted with 15 different grape varieties - 60% Bordeaux and 40% Rhone. It is one of the area’s few SIP (Sustainability in Practice) certified wineries. We particularly enjoyed the 2008 Rose which by the way was named by Sunset Magazine as one of the top three favorites on the Central Coast.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">Below is a rendering (courtesy of Halter Ranch website) of the new winemaking facility and tasting room. There is a newly constructed covered bridge that will connect the new structure with the original property. I love that it is in keeping with the character and ambiance of the property. You can read more about it here: </span><a href="http://www.halterranch.com/Our-Story/winery_project" title="http://www.halterranch.com/Our-Story/winery_project"><span style="font-size: medium;">http://www.halterranch.com/Our-Story/winery_project</span></a><br />

<span style="font-size: medium;">While visiting Halter Ranch we had the pleasure of running into the charming, cute and bubbly owner of Uncorked Wine Tours. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">We have not yet taken any escorted local wine tours but I can tell you if we do we will definately contact Katie. She will help you choose the wineries you would like to visit or if you have your own itinerary even better! She will even bring along a gourmet lunch. She has a beautiful van that seats six.
